Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Our event is dedicated to recognizing this pivotal moment in history, celebrating African American culture, recognizing American History, and fostering a sense of community.

"Whispers of Freedom" is a compelling theatrical journey that delves into the heart of Juneteenth, offering a poignant exploration of its historical significance and enduring legacy. This play is based on a 17 year old slave girl, Charlotte Brooks, that overheard the fact that slavery had been abolished for two years but the slaves were still being held captive. She got the word to other slaves and then fled with her daughter.
The Cast
Performing for the second time at the Queen Creek Juneteenth Festival, Marlana-
Patrice will captivate the audience by revisiting the past through words and
music. She is guided by what the legendary Nina Simone once said: “An artist’s
duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times…” Native Clevelander
Marlana-Patrice has enjoyed performing at community events throughout the
Cleveland Metro and Greater Phoenix areas. Also, in Los Angeles and online. In
Phoenix, one of her most fulfilling was as an ensemble actress in Ntozake
Shange’s masterpiece, for colored girls who have considered suicide /
when the rainbow is enuf.
Marlana-Patrice’s memoir in verse, Taking Off My Black & White Saddle Shoes: Cleveland Poems debuts this summer. Copies will soon be available through
World Stage Press and the author (Release Date: May 19).
